ABOUT ME

CHUN YI TSANG is a Master of Music student in the University of Toronto’s faculty of Music Collaborative Piano program. As a musical performer, and under the guidance of Professor Steven Philcox, her training intersects piano solos, collaboration with singers and instrumentalists, and ensemble music. She has performed in international festivals and masterclasses coached by Graham Johnson, Margo Garett, and Mirror Visions Ensemble.

A recipient of the Garth and Marjorie Beckett Fellowship in Collaborative Piano and the France-Canada Cultural Exchange Experience France Award, Chun Yi is working on her collaborative recital program incorporating French mélodie and chamber music, while training at the European American Musical Alliance’s Summer Music Institute in Paris.

She has taught for over ten years, including in individual lessons, accompanist in children’s choirs, and conducting in percussion bands, and since 2020, has taken on the position as Joint School Music Association’s piano competition adjudicator.

Chun Yi received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in Music (Piano Performance and Pedagogy) from Hong Kong Baptist University under the guidance of Mr. Shum Kin Wai. After graduating from Hong Kong Baptist University, she studied at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where she obtained her Master of Music degree studying with Reiko Neriki and Evelyne Brancart; she also studied pedagogy with Dr. Karen Taylor and collaborative piano with Lee Philips. She worked as an accompanist in the studios of Eli Eban, Linda Strommen and Masumi Per Rostad while at IUJSM; she also served as an accompanist at the Indiana University Ballet Department and Indiana University Summer String Academy.
